Introducing Wi-Fi Alliance Services: driving broad adoption of 6 GHz

Austin, TX – August 3, 2023 – Wi-Fi Alliance Services – a subsidiary of Wi-Fi Alliance® – is emerging at a pivotal time in the Wi-Fi® industry. With global momentum around outdoor and standard power operations in 6 GHz comes Wi-Fi® Automated Frequency Coordination (Wi-Fi AFC) – the flagship service offering from Wi-Fi Alliance Services –– enabling customers to extract the most value from the 6 GHz frequency band. Wi-Fi AFC is purpose-built for Wi-Fi equipment vendors and service providers aiming to deploy standard power or outdoor Wi-Fi devices in 6 GHz and will ensure protection of incumbent operations. Leading Wi-Fi equipment vendors  are actively trialing service integration with the pre-commercial Wi-Fi AFC while awaiting device and operator authorization by national regulatory authorities. Wi-Fi Alliance Services continues to accept new customers for initial back-end integration trials.

Wi-Fi Alliance Services is built on a foundation of trust and credibility – through its close relationship with Wi-Fi Alliance – established more than two decades ago.  The company exists solely to drive the broadest possible adoption of 6 GHz and brings deep expertise and talent to address customer-specific needs and assist customers in preparing their products and services for the market. Wi-Fi Alliance Services is uniquely positioned to deliver a vendor-agnostic service that complements Wi-Fi’s inherent strengths and supports rapid, cost-effective deployment.

Wi-Fi AFC delivers many benefits:

  • Scalability: utilizes dynamic, predictive, and targeted scaling policies to support anticipated (or unanticipated) device growth

  • High performance: allows for continual optimization of frequency evaluation and data management to improve latency and throughput

  • Latest security: offers compliance with the latest industry benchmarks for data at-rest and in-transit

  • Advanced modeling: employs site-specific information for improved calculation accuracy and incumbent protection to ensure Wi-Fi networks  receive optimal access to spectrum

  • Highly extensible: supports implementation of value-added features to meet evolving customer needs, such as integration with existing cloud systems, and can rapidly enter new markets as 6 GHz availability grows

“Wi-Fi Alliance Services is proud to serve a vital role in accelerating broad access to outdoor and standard power 6 GHz spectrum operation,” said Kevin Robinson, president and CEO, Wi-Fi Alliance Services. “The success of our customers is our purpose, and we are committed to offering a service that delivers sustainable business value for our customers across the globe. We also understand that long-term success is only possible by ensuring Wi-Fi remains a good steward of unlicensed spectrum as it has been for decades.”

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) made the entire 6 GHz band available for unlicensed operations  – including Wi-Fi – and Wi-Fi 6E and forthcoming Wi-Fi 7 devices operating outdoors or at standard power levels in this swath of unlicensed spectrum are required to use an AFC system to avoid interference with incumbent services. Likewise, the Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) also made the entire 6 GHz band available for unlicensed operations with the requirement that standard-power devices operate under the control of an AFC system. Wi-Fi Alliance Services is currently focused on serving the U.S. and Canadian markets, but is prepared to quickly adapt and scale Wi-Fi AFC globally to serve Wi-Fi equipment vendors and service providers as the regulatory landscape evolves around the world.
