Wi-Fi Alliance Services drives Automated Frequency Coordination momentum in the U.S.

Industry leaders move forward on AFC for outdoor and standard power 6 GHz Wi-Fi®

Austin, TX – April 24, 2024 – As the demand for high-performance Wi-Fi® services continues to surge, Wi-Fi Alliance Services is supporting U.S. spectrum management through the adoption and deployment of its Automated Frequency Coordination (AFC) solution. The FCC approval for commercial operations of its 6 GHz Wi-Fi AFC service earlier this year marked a significant milestone in the evolution of telecommunications. Now, industry leaders are embracing AFC to optimize spectrum utilization, minimize interference, and deliver outdoor and standard power 6 GHz Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi Alliance Services is proud to support industry leading companies – spanning consumer, service provider, and enterprise segments – as they prepare to deliver standard power 6 GHz products and services to the market.

Leading companies showcase the intended impact of AFC services in the band:

“Standard power expands innovation in the 6 GHz band, unleashing the full potential of 6 GHz Wi-Fi. ASUS will leverage Wi-Fi AFC from Wi-Fi Alliance Services to launch various AFC-enabled Wi-Fi 7 routers and mesh systems very soon.” – Tenlong Deng, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Wireless and Networking at ASUS

"Cisco's work with Wi-Fi Alliance Services has been pivotal in driving industry-wide adoption and expanded use of the 6GHz spectrum. AFC is a game-changer, opening new possibilities for reliable, long-range Wi-Fi that is essential for connecting large outdoor spaces and critical infrastructure. We are committed to AFC by participating in standards development and offering the most comprehensive Wi-Fi 6E portfolio on the market." – says Peiman Amini, Principal Engineer at Cisco and OpenAFC Co-chair

“Faster speeds, increased range and additional capacity: those are just a few of the benefits our customers will realize as a result of standard power transmission over the 6 GHz spectrum. Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 are set to deliver their highly anticipated potential across a wide array of high-density environments, particularly outdoor venues like stadiums, theme parks, college campuses, and more. At Extreme, we’re thrilled to be the first vendor with significant outdoor Wi-Fi 6E deployments to use standard power. With several sites already deployed, we will work with Wi-Fi Alliance Services to deliver uninterrupted connectivity, expanded coverage and improved performance of devices across outdoor environments with the click of a button. For our customers, this translates into smoother business operations, superior customer experiences, and increased productivity.” – David Coleman, Office of the CTO, Extreme Networks

“The implementation of AFC will be of tremendous benefit to our Nighthawk and Orbi customers. The resulting improvement in 6 GHz range will help to ensure that end users with the latest Wi-Fi 7 devices can stay connected to the faster, interference-free 6GHz Wi-Fi band for maximum gaming, streaming and teleconferencing performance.” – Sandeep Harpalani, vice president of product marketing at NETGEAR

"We are delighted that Wi-Fi Alliance Services has become an Automated Frequency Coordination operator. AFC will significantly improve the performance of 6 GHz Wi-Fi. With the full capabilities of 6 GHz Wi-Fi released, users are set to experience increased range, lower latency, faster speeds, and higher capacity connectivity with Wi-Fi 7 and Wi-Fi 6E devices." - Pingji Li, VP of TP-Link

Looking Ahead:

As the U.S. continues to embrace AFC technology, other countries – including Canada – have taken the next steps to streamline regulatory approval processes and enable commercially operating standard power 6 GHz Wi-Fi services. Wi-Fi Alliance Services looks forward to continuing to maximize availability of Wi-Fi AFC in all regions.
